Positive Minds

At Beech Hyde Primary School and Nursery, we realise the importance of helping our pupils to develop a growth mindset so that they can reach their potential both in terms of their learning and their personal development.

Mindset is a mental attitude that determines how you will interpret and respond to situations.  People with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence is fixed whereas people with a growth mindset believe that abilities and understanding can be developed.

“In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” (Dweck, 2015)

There has been a lot of research into the impact of a growth mindset on children’s progress and attainment.

We have developed Beech Hyde Positive Minds to teach the children about developing a growth mindset and encouraging them that the brain is like a muscle that gets stronger and works better the more it is exercised.

We have created six characters that represent the learning characteristics that we want our children to develop in order to become well-rounded and life-long learners.
