Sport

At Beech Hyde we are lucky to have a full time Sports Coach, and each class has 2 hours of PE every week (1 hour in Nursery and Reception). Beech Hyde has achieved the Platinum School Games Award due to its commitment to engaging and inclusive sport for everyone!

We have a large number of sports clubs - Football, netball, cricket, athletics, table tennis and many more.  Some sports have leagues (e.g. Y5/6 netball, Y5/6 football), some have day tournaments (e.g. tag rugby, chess, cricket). We like to encourage as many children to participate in clubs as possible, in the firm belief that children should join sports clubs for the pleasure of enjoying playing with their friends and improving their skills. There are usually more children at a sports club than there are places on league and tournament teams. Strict rules for the numbers and gender split of teams are set by the Harpenden and District Sports Association, that organise the leagues/ tournaments. Teams are selected by the Sports Coach based on performance at the sports club, which they must have demonstrated a commitment to to be considered. There are a number of factors to be considered when selecting a team, and for privacy, the rationale for selection can not always be shared. Beech Hyde aims to be as fair as possible, whilst selecting a competitive team. We cannot also please everyone, but we aim to give as many opportunities as possible so that there is something for everyone. Alongside the league and tournament matches/ events, the Sports Coach also organises friendly matches so that as many club members as possible get the chance to play.  Beech Hyde reserves the right to select its teams without input from parents/carers.

In addition to HDSA, Beech Hyde also takes part in as many St Albans School Games events as possible - World Games Day, Netball Festival, Can Do Festival, Dance Festival and many more. These events are all entirely inclusive.

Four pupils in Year 6 are elected as Sports Ambassadors for the year.  Their role is to involve as many pupils as possible in sports activities and encourage our pupils to develop healthy lifestyles. In each class from Y1-5 two Sports Leaders are selected each year. They champion all things active within their class and ensure the teacher is reminded to complete the daily mile every day!

Beech Hyde has a an annual sports day which includes Field events in the morning and track events in the afternoon, which families are invited to support. Its a fun packed day for everyone and pupils win points for their house team, with and eventual house winner!
