Homework
We know that you share our high aspirations for your child’s education as this will have a direct impact on their future life choices. The partnership between home and school is key in this, and we have identified 3 key elements that will support children’s learning at home.
- Reading - One of the most valuable things you can do to help your child progress is to listen to them read every day - children on the Little Wandle reading scheme will have a school reading book that they must read to you. They will also have a ‘sharing book’ which you can read with them or to them.
- Maths - Secondly, it is invaluable if you can help them practise times tables and number bonds. A weekly task or ‘mini maths’ will be set for you to complete with them.
- Spelling - Spellings will be sent home each week, and we ask that you practise these with them.
In Years 4-6 we are also asking parents to support their children by helping them to complete a series of challenges from the homework grid - one every two weeks. The dates when the homework books need to be handed in are listed with the grid of activities. When the task is complete, they need to show the teacher evidence of this. This evidence may be a photograph, leaflet, presentation or simply talking to an adult about their experiences. Each child will have a homework book in which they should keep their ‘evidence’. There are 9 tasks on the grid, so not all will be completed during the term, unless your child wants to do them all! The grid will also be available to parents/ children in Years R-3 should you wish to extend your child’s learning, but this is optional.
Children in Year 6 will be given additional, more formal homework as they prepare for secondary school. Parents/carers of Reception children are encouraged to look at and respond to images and observations sent from school via Tapestry, and share experiences from home on Tapestry.
In Years 1-6 children are also asked to prepare a termly presentation. Presenting to your peers can be daunting, but it is a very valuable experience, building confidence and resilience.
